Sensei Jerry Marr has almost 60 years experience in Japanese martial arts, with almost 50 years in Karate. He holds the rank of 7th Dan, recognized by the Japan Karate Shotorenmai (JKS) organization, formerly headed by the famous Tetsuhiko Asai, 9th Dan. Sensei Marr received the promotion to the rank of Shichi-Dan (7th Dan) in October 2007. The Technical Examining Board of the JKS in Japan reviewed Marr's technical background and experience; and with Katsumata Sensei's recommendation, felt this promotion was highly deserved.

Master Nishiyama once referred to Marr Sensei as being a pioneer in promoting and developing Traditional JKA Shotokan Karate in Canada. The development and success of present day Traditional JKA Shotokan is due largely to Marr's efforts.

ALMOST EVERYONE who is practising the JKA Shotokan system of Karate in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Ontario, and parts of Alberta can trace their background to being either a direct student of Marr Sensei's, or indirectly, as their own Sensei would have been a student of Marr's.

MARR SENSEI is highly respected for his technical knowledge of Traditional JKA Shotokan Karate, conducting seminars throughout Canada and the United States.  Marr's ability in demonstrating and teaching the practical applications of the various techniques, combined his sense of humor and his dynamic personality make him a popular and sought after instructor.

Sensei Marr has two sons; Darren, 5th Dan, and Jarret, 3rd Dan, that also practise JKA Traditional Karate. Darren lives in Minneapolis where he trains and teaches for Fusaro Sensei. Darren has an impressive competition record in Canada and also internationally. Jarret’s competition ability is also impressive on both the Canadian and International front.  (See Instructor's Qualifications)

His brother Frank who is a brown belt, was Marr's first student; and nephew Frank Jr., a 1st Dan, are both members of Midwest Karate.

Marr Sensei is also Sho-Dan (1st Dan) in Kodokan Judo (He was 1/2 point from his Ni-Dan (2nd) before stopping Judo training.  Marr's Midwest Karate Logo is popular and is used either whole or in part by many dojos.  (See Midwest Karate logo)
